Stamp No. 34Maggiemagoo

Carole is a designer from Leeds, in the UK. Working as Maggiemagoo Designs, she creates printed textiles, embroidery art, enamel pins, and paper goods. These stamps, along with much of her work is inspired by nature and folk art. We met on Instagram after she posted some of her fictional stamps.

Have you designed a stamp before?

I’ve never designed a real stamp before. I’ve only ever created imaginary ones. It’s been a bit of a dream for a while, and I was so happy when you asked me to work on this set.

What was the most interesting or fun aspect of designing a poster stamp? What unique challenges did it present?

I think stamps are like miniature pieces of art. I have a collection of vintage stamps and the detail on them is incredible. The most interesting, but also most challenging aspect was working on something so small, whilst also managing to achieve the level of detail I wanted.

Tell us about the art. Did you create something new for this stamp?

I’d created a digital fake ‘stamp’ originally, which you saw on Instagram that led to this collaboration. The top right floral is a new version of the original idea. So this was the starting point and the other stamps were developed from that design. I really wanted to put birds on one of the stamps as I associate birds with letters winging their way around the world. There is something very special about receiving a handwritten letter I think.

Anything else?

I enjoyed creating these so much and I’d like to design more, the stamp ideas keep on coming!
