Stamp No. 20Eric W. Mast (aka E*Rock)

Eric W. Mast (aka E*Rock) is a Portland, Oregon visual artist and musician who tried to concern himself with making culture as a critique of culture rather than making work as a critique of culture. This has included music production, running record labels, DJing, music video production, video installation and performance, DIY publishing, organizing events, as well as oil painting and print-making.

Have you designed a stamp before?

Nope, never had the chance.

What was the most interesting or fun aspect of designing a poster stamp? What unique challenges did it present?

It felt weirder than I thought it would working at this scale, in terms of line weight, so I tried to keep it simple.

Tell us about the art. Did you create something new for this stamp?

I did make something new. I improvised without any direction. I went against my initial impulse and tried to avoid making bootleg postage stamps. It  feels like doing that could be a federal offense. I hid the Cerne Abbas giant in there because I had been drawing him earlier this week, but otherwise my mind was completely blank.

Anything else?

My mind is still blank.
