- Young children about to start kindergarten in some FTF regions
WHY IT MATTERS:
Many young children in Arizona do not attend preschool, and for those 5-year-olds who have never had a classroom experience — with scheduled activities, directions to follow, and other children — the transition to a structured kindergarten class environment can be hard.

WHAT IT IS:
Transition to kindergarten programs are designed to give kids — especially those who have not had the benefit of attending preschool — some classroom experience before their first day of school. Together with a parent, children attend a series of classes, usually in the summer before they start kindergarten. Children are introduced to what an elementary school and kindergarten classroom looks like and the social-emotional skills they’ll need, how to stand in line, listen and follow a teacher’s directions.
Kindergarten transition programs are free of charge and available in these First Things First regions:
- Cocopah Tribe Region
- Colorado River Indian Community Region
- Pascua Yaqui Tribe Region
- Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Region
Some programs are held in the summer only. Transportation and meals may be available. Contact the kindergarten program in your area to learn more about the schedule and how to sign up.
