First Things First First Things First

Home Visiting

WHO IT’S FOR:

  • Families with young children (birth to age 5)
  • New parents
  • Teen parents
  • Expectant mothers
  • Grandparents raising grandchildren

WHY IT MATTERS:

Starting from birth, having a close, positive relationship with their primary caregiver — usually mom or dad or both — makes a huge impact on a child’s future. Parents want to do their best for their child, but many feel overwhelmed with stress and the challenges of being a parent.

You can be the parent you want to be. You have what it takes to help your child learn, grow and be healthy. Home visiting can help.

WHAT IT IS:

First Things First supports free home visiting programs across Arizona that provide 1-on-1 help for parents of young children and expectant moms. A trained parent educator will work with you, in the convenience of your own home, to:

  • Help you understand how your child is developing
  • Learn positive parenting skills and how to handle challenging behaviors
  • Help your child learn and develop social-emotional skills
  • Do fun activities with your child
  • Connect you with helpful information and resources available in your community
  • Answer your questions and give you emotional support and encouragement

You’ll build a close relationship with your parent educator. Regular home visits are made over a period of months or years. Visits may be scheduled for every week, every other week, or every month, depending on the program and your availability.

There are different types of programs for different parents and children. Check with the home visiting program in your area to learn more and see if you are eligible based on your family income. They’ll be happy to talk with you and help you see if home visiting is right for you and your family.
