We can’t wait to see what they’ve uncovered!

Nature Matters!

National Park Service archaeologists will report on the first archaeological investigations of Fort Astoria/Fort George.  Fort Astoria, established in 1811, was the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains and the hub of a regional fur trade. While it has been listed as a National Historic Landmark for decades, archaeologists have never (until now) recorded the fort.  Dr. Doug Wilson will talk about the unique Bicentennial of the War of 1812 connection with Astoria, Oregon, detailing the struggle of control of the Pacific Northwest and culture contact with indigenous American Indians. Dr. Bob Cromwell will present the newest finds from the project.  Doors will open at 6 p.m. for those wanting to purchase beverages and food at the George before the free public event.
