A Philosofarian Discussion.
Freedom is something we in the modern world, and especially in the US, see as fundamental – both as a right we are entitled to and as a basic feature of our identity. To many, this can almost seem self-evident. At the same time, there are several questions that arise with regard to this sentiment. Just what exactly does the term “freedom” mean? Should we distinguish between the outward freedoms we fight for in politics and society from the inward freedoms we struggle with in our psyches and spirituality? Is there any objective way of speaking about freedom? Do the freedoms of others shape my own freedoms and visa versa? And, what sorts of responsibilities exist within society and within ourselves for the protection and cultivation of freedom?
