Wit & Wisdom: Should We Be Afraid of Artificial Intelligence?

From “Terminator” to “I, Robot” , to “2001 – a space odyssey”, there is definitely a feeling in popular culture that Artificial Intelligence (or “AI” for short) is bound to kill us. These concerns, as it turns out, might be a little overblown and paranoid. After all, our lives are becoming more and more enmeshed with AI. From social media, to “smart” technologies, to generative programs like Chat CPT, our lives are guided by AI and its products in ways that we don’t expect, and sometimes don’t even imagine.  But just what, exactly, is “AI” and how is it connected to, or reflective of, our own intelligence?  Why and how is it becoming so enmeshed in contemporary life? And, of course, what kinds of “dangers” might it hold, and how ought we to think about them?
